The Writing Center

The Writing Center offers free writing tutorial services to Brandeis University undergraduate and graduate students. The center's staff of knowledgeable graduate student consultants can help you with papers, personal statements, short assignments, ESL issues, job applications and most of your writing needs.

Make an Appointment at the Writing Center

From noon until 6 p.m. each day, consultation sessions are by appointment only

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, sessions are drop-in—no appointment is required, but show up at 6 p.m. to guarantee your desired slot.


This guide is intended to assist you in researching and writing your third essay for UWS Writing Mental Illness.  Here's a brief run down of what you'll find in this guide:

  • Choosing a Topic - suggestions for choosing an idea, tips for narrowing or broadening a topic, ways to find more articles on your topic when doing a keyword search, websites for literary criticism
  • Finding Books - using the Brandeis library catalog, tips for finding the book in the correct building, requesting books from other libraries
  • Understanding Call Numbers - where to find the book's number in the library catalog record, how to read the shelf labels to get to the right place
  • Finding Articles - good databases to start your search in, using Brandeis Scholar and other databases
  • Evaluating Resources - how to tell if you've found a good source or one that will get your grade marked down
  • Citing Your Sources - when is a citation not a parking ticket?, how to get your bibliography right
