Activity 1: Find coverage of a film in the Entertainment Magazine Archive

  • Work with one or two classmates.
  • Try searching the Entertainment Magazine Archive for items about a film or show you’ve watched in class or will watch later this semester

  • Limit your search results to a few years around the time period when the film or show first premiered.
  • Look for an interesting article or advertisement to share with the class. How could this article or advertisement help you explore representations of Asian/American women in film, television, or theater? 
  • Place a screenshot of your article or advertisement in our class slide deck. Be prepared to tell the class about why you've selected this article or advertisement.

  • Work with one or two classmates.
  • Try searching ProQuest Historical Newspapers and Ethnic NewsWatch for articles about a film or show you will watch later this semester:
    • The Joy Luck Club (1993)
    • All American Girl (1994)
    • Saving Face (2004)
    • Mindy Project 
  • Limit your search results to a few years around the time period when the film or show first premiered.
  • Explore news coverage from Asian American newspapers in Ethnic NewsWatch. Compare these articles to those in ProQuest Historical Newspapers.
  • How could these news articles help you explore representations of Asian/American women in film, television, or theater? Please be prepared to share some of your group's observations with the class.

Activity 4: Find Scholarly Secondary Sources

  • Work with one or two classmates.
  • Using some of the keywords we've brainstormed as a class, search for secondary source using one of the databases below. 
  • Locate a scholarly source that you could use to contextualize a film or show you'll watch in class. Please be prepared to share your group's source with the class.
