R is a free language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modeling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, and more) and graphical techniques. It has a large user community and thousands of useful packages.
One of R’s strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae.
R is a programming language that is especially powerful for data exploration, visualization, and statistical analysis. To interact with R, we use RStudio. RStudio has a free downloadable desktop IDE or a cloud-based version. For detailed installation instructions for your operating system, see Software Carpentry Instructions.
