Finding Books, Journals, and Videos: Searching the Library Catalog

The Library Catalog tab of Brandeis Library OneSearch is the easy way to search the online catalog of the Brandeis Library. The Library Catalog tab is the principal means for locating books, journals, and videos in the library collections. OneSearch can be useful for this purpose at two levels of your research. If you have already identified the book(s) you need through other research aids, search by Title or by Author to locate the item(s) in the library. If you are trying to identify books that will be useful for your research, search the Library Catalog by keyword, using subject and other options to refine your search.

Finding Books at Brandeis

  • Search the online catalog, OneSearch, to find information and call numbers for most of the books owned by Brandeis.
  • Be aware that books provide a detailed analysis of a particular subject, but may not be the most up to date source for the most current topics.
  • All books are shelved by Library of Congress call number, except for U.S. Government Documents.
  • Most books can be found in the stacks (bookshelves) and can be checked out at the Information and Borrowing Desk.
  • Rare books from the Special Collections Department (on Goldfarb 2), bound volumes of journals, and Reference books from the Reference area, are available for in-library use only.
  • Maps of the libraries, indicating call number locations, are also available in print at the Information Desk of each library.
  • To find books that Brandeis doesn't own, search for your topic in WorldCat. Once you have located your item in WorldCat, use the Interlibrary Loan Form in OneSearch to request it from another library.

If It's Not at the Library

  • Is the item you want checked out by someone else? Ask for a recall (click "Returns" to view policy).
  • In a hurry? Get a Boston Library Consortium (BLC) card and borrow the item from a nearby academic library - use WorldCat to find which libraries own the item.
  • Have a little more time? Request the item from another library through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
