Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies

Recommended resources and strategies for research in Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies.

Welcome

This page includes activities for the library research session on Feb 7, 2024.

Activity 1: Find and contextualize historical news articles

Work with one or two classmates.

Visit Chronicling America: America's Historical Newspapers and select Hawaii from the States drop-down menu of the left of the search box.

Search for some keywords related to late 19th/early 20th century Hawaiian history.

Select an article of interest.

What can you learn about the newspaper the article was published in? (You can find information about the newspaper by clicking on the About {title of newspaper} link just above the scan of the newspaper page. An example is below)

Please be prepared to share what you've found with the class.

Activity 2: Primary Sources and Research Questions

Work with two of your classmates and select a digital collection from the list below. Use some of the search strategies we’ve discussed today to find a primary source that relates to the United States in the Pacific World.

Add a screenshot of your primary source to your group's slide in the class slide deck. Generate a potential research question based on this source.
