Using Moodle to collect assignments offers several key benefits that enhance the student experience.
On the Assignment settings page, give the assignment activity a unique name(and a description or summary if desired).
You can add add activity instructions that will be displayed to students on the submission page where a student edits and submits the assignment.
Additionally, you can upload files that accompany the assignment.
Set the availability of the assignment using any or all of the four dates indicated.
Note: The "Enable" checkbox needs to be checked next to the date you'd like to enable for use in order to set the date. Additionally, the hours you set is in 24 hour format i.e. 1pm is "13"). Setting a due date creates a calendar event that appears on students' dashboards and calendars, helping them track assignment deadlines.
Here you can set the grading type for the assignment and the grading method.
Sort the assignment into a category in the gradebook.
Setting a grade to pass will cause all scores at passing or above to appear in the color green on the grader report. Scores below the grade to pass will appear in red.
The assignment activity has many additional settings that can be configured, if desired.
The two submission types available are "File Submissions" and "Online Text"
Within the Submission Types section of the assignment settings, you'll see "Accepted File Types". This allows you to indicate and accept only certain file types for submissions. (i.e only PDF or Word Documents).
To add and restrict file submissions, click on "Choose".
From the pop-out window, select the file types you'd like to restrict file submissions to. Then click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the popout window.
Note: You can expand certain categories to make more granular file type selections.
Choose how you want to provide feedback on the assignment, in addition to the grade the student will receive.
Choose whether students must click a "Submit" button or agree to a submission statement to complete the submission process.
Choose whether students will have more than one attempt at the assignment. Note: The additional attempts are granted after the assignment is graded.
The Library recommends selecting Yes for the first two questions, and setting additional attempts to be granted manually.
If enabled, students submit work as a group rather than individually. For example, one file can be submitted on behalf of the entire group.
Configure notifications for instructors and TAs when an assignment is submitted, and set the default for notifying students when they receive a grade.
Note: We recommend against using scale because they can have unpredictable outcomes.
Adjust parameters such as assignment visibility to students, assign an ID number for complex gradebook calculations, and enable group mode.
Group mode can be used in coordination with Group overrides to allow different groups to have different due dates for the same assignment.
Set restrictions to control which students can view the assignment. (For example, only students who completed the previous assignment can see and access the assignment.)
This is where you can enable Compilatio to check for plagiarism against submissions.
Once you've configured everything, click "Save and Return to Course" to go back to the main course page, or click "Save and Display" to save and view the assignment activity. Alternatively, you can click "Cancel" to discard any changes.
