Overview

A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is a web address linking to a website or online file.  Instructors can use the URL resource tool in Moodle to share links with students, saving them time.

One way to add a URL link to a Moodle course page is by selecting the URL tool from the activity chooser. 

  1. Open the course and find the section where you would like to add a URL link. 
  2. Select the + sign to add a new Activity or Resource.

  1. Select URL from the Activity Chooser.

  1. On the next screen enter a descriptive name for the link.  Then enter the URL to the website or file.  We also recommend adjusting the Appearance Setting to New Window.

  1. Optional: If you have enabled activity and course completion settings, you can enable activity completion to verify that students are visiting the URL link.

Best Practices for Adding Multiple URLs to a course

Having multiple URLs on the main course page can slow down loading times and make navigation more difficult for students.

To improve organization and performance, consider adding URLs to a Page activity instead. This keeps the course page cleaner and allows students to access all relevant links in one place.

How to Add URL links to a Page Activity

  1. Select the + sign to add an Activity or Resource. 
  2. Select the Page activity from the Activity Chooser.

  1. Enter a descriptive name for the Page. 
  2. From the Content setting, select the link option from the Text Editor.

  1. Enter the descriptive text to display for the link. 
  2. Enter the URL you want to use.  Select Open in new window. 
  3. Select Create link

  1. Repeat steps 4-7 for all the links you would like to add to the Page.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save and Return to course

Students who select the Page activity will be able to view and access all the URL links that have been added.
