Need to use resources that are non-scholarly or from outside the library? Here are some starting places:

Google Scholar This link opens in a new window
Uses Google's powerful search to find scholarly literature. This link to Google Scholar authenticates you as a Brandeis user and provides the Brandeis Get It button next to many of your search results, allowing you to more easily find the full text of the articles.
Use quotes around any key phrases (more than one word) to help get more specific results, and use the filters on the left-hand side of the page to narrow by date or type of resources.

Google Advanced Search
If you need materials from another country, especially popular resources or general websites, as well as basic government information resources, use this advanced search option and specify country or URL to narrow your results along with your keywords.
Gutenberg
Need a text that is in the public domain? Check Gutenberg to see if they have it in text, pdf, or kindle format.
Wikipedia
Yes, Wikipedia. Always, always double check the references and facts that you pull from this website and keep in mind the inherent bias that may be present in a website where the bulk of editing is done by people of means (who have the time, money, and education). However, Wikipedia can be great for keywords and basic facts.
