Finding Books in the Library

Browse the virtual shelves in Language and Literature

Books at Brandeis are organized in the Library of Congress call number system. Try scrolling down and click on Subclass PQ for French and Italian literature.

(Materials on French and Italian language fall under Subclass PC -- Romanic Languages)

Not sure how to find items using a call number system? No problem! Check out our Locating Items in the Library guide.

Book checked out by someone else? Have it recalled for your use.

Using WorldCat to Find Books

WorldCat is a combined catalog for most of the libraries in the United States--and some foreign libraries as well.

WorldCat is the best way to find books and journals not at Brandeis. Use the "Libraries" button in the full record of a particular item to locate libraries in the Boston area that have the book or journal.

You can request ILL (interlibrary loan) directly from a WorldCat record by clicking on the button. For more about interlibrary loan, click here.

Searching the Library Catalog with Brandeis Library OneSearch

You can search the Brandeis Library catalog through the OneSearch catalog by subject, title, or author to find books (including e-books) relevant to your research.

Try searching for a particular author or title. Not sure what to search for? Try searching by keyword.

  1. Enter your keyword into the main search box. A keyword is a word that encompases the main idea of your topic.
  2. Hit search.
  3. One the left-hand side of the page, you'll see ways to filter down your results. Try using resource type if you know you only want books or e-books, or subject if you want to narrow down your field of study.
  4. Keep scrolling down to see more filter options, including date and language to help narrow your search.

If you have already identified the book(s) you need through other research aids, use the Advanced Search to search by Title or by Author to locate the item(s) in the library.
