Search Tips for Historical Sources

If you are using a database with an Advanced Search form, try using the Advanced Search features to refine your search.

Think about what terms that might have been used to describe your topic during the time period. For example: the name of a specific person or organization or even a term that wouldn't be used today.

In addition to searching, try browsing these collections to learn about sources that you wouldn't have necessarily thought of searching for.

Historical newspaper and magazine collections

When looking for historical newspaper articles, remember to look for articles published during the historical time period under study.

Class exercise #1

Skim the following resource to learn more about Edmonia Lewis' life and work:

In pairs, conduct a biographical search on Edmonia Lewis (1844-1911) in two different ways:

Working in pairs, one member of each pair should search ProQuest Historical Black Newspapers, while the other searches ProQuest Historical Newspapers. You’ll have a chance to compare your results.

In each database, search for articles about Edmonia Lewis and find one source from the artist’s lifetime and one posthumous source.

Please note: When searching in ProQuest Historical Newspapers, exclude articles African American news outlets so that you and your partner can make a comparison. The following are the African American news outlets: the Chicago Defender, New York Amsterdam News, the Norfolk Journal and Guide, Los Angeles Sentinel, Cleveland Call and Post, Atlanta Daily World, and the Baltimore Afro-American.

Compare how each news outlet characterizes the artist. Pay attention to the following questions to guide your analysis:

  • In what context is she mentioned? What is the article headline?
  • How does the newspaper describe her? Specific words or adjectives?
  • How is she positioned in relation to African Americans?
  • How is she positioned in relation to other artists?
