ANTH 124A: Maritime Archaeology GIS Project

The ArcGIS Pro interface consists of three base components when first opened: the contents pane, the ribbon toolbar, and the map canvas. Additional tool/feature panes can be added under the View menu.

ArcGIS Pro Settings Overview

  • Portals: Displays licensing portal info. The default licensing portal (https://www.arcgis.com) works for Brandeis accounts.
  • Licensing: View licenses & expiration dates, authorize ArcGIS Pro to work offline*. Licenses will auto-renew on their expiration date if you’re still at Brandeis.
  • Options: Set up default preferences/settings for ArcGIS Pro & projects within the software. You can set up recovery files / backups for your ArcGIS Pro projects under Options > General > Project recovery. You will need to save an ArcGIS Pro project before you can configure your project backup settings.
  • Python: Download & update Python libraries.
  • About: Update software. Can authorize software to automatically check for updates.

*Important: If you authorize ArcGIS Pro for offline use, your license will be tied a specific device. You will not be able to receive automatic software updates, new extensions, or use ArcGIS Pro on another computer until you reconnect to our licensing portal. We do not recommend taking your ArcGIS Pro license offline unless absolutely necessary.

Contents Pane

The Contents pane displays all of the layers that have been added to your map. Layers can be viewed by drawing order, source, selection, etc. You can drag-and-drop layers if you need to change their drawing order on your map.

  • Map: Basic map tools.
  • Insert: Add new content, custom color templates, etc.
  • Analysis: Access geoprocessing, workflow, and other analysis tools.
  • View: Turn on/off the visibility of key window panes in ArcGIS Pro. The Contents, Catalog, and Geoprocessing panes are the most commonly used panes.
  • Edit: Tools for editing spatial and attribute data. Can also be used to create new features.
  • Imagery: Raster data tools.
• Share: Sharing options for map project, individual layers, finalized map, etc.

The Map Canvas displays all of the layers that you’ve added to your map. You can create 2d maps and 3d scenes within a single ArcGIS Pro project. Each map/scene that you add to a project will display in its own tab.
