Moodle 4.0 Resources for Faculty

Overview

This guide is an overview of activity and assessment tools available to faculty members. Moodle has several assessment tools built-in, such as the Assignment and Quiz tools.  There are also other tools added into Moodle such as VoiceThread, Perusall, and H5P, which are included in this guide.

Notification settings in Moodle 4 help you stay informed about important activities and updates in your courses. You can customize these settings to receive alerts in a way that suits you best, whether by email or within Moodle itself.

Notifications can include reminders about assignments, forum posts, and other course activities. By adjusting your preferences, you can ensure that you get the information you need without being overwhelmed by too many messages.

This guide will show you how to manage your notification settings so that you can stay connected and up-to-date in your courses.

1. To access your notification preferences, select the Notification tray from the Moodle Navigation Bar.

2. Select the gear icon to access your notification settings.

Understanding Web and Email Notifications

Web Notifications

Web notifications are alerts you receive directly within Moodle when you’re logged in. These can include:

  1. Activity Updates: Notifications about forum posts, assignment submissions, or quiz results.
  2. Messages: Alerts for new messages from instructors or peers.
  3. Reminders: Alerts for upcoming deadlines or events.

Email Notifications

Email notifications are sent to your registered email address and can include:

  1. Course Updates: Emails about new posts, grade changes, or feedback.
  2. Assignment Reminders: Notifications about upcoming due dates or submission confirmations.
  3. Personal Messages: Alerts about direct messages or replies to your forum posts.

If you find receiving an email notification every time a student complete a quiz overwhelming, you can easily turn them off.  

1. Select the notifications tray from the course header.

2. Select the gear icon to open your notification settings.

3, Find the section for Quiz Notifications and set it to Off.

This will stop email notifications about students completing quizzes, helping to keep your inbox clear. 

Override for Student Accomodations

Directions for adding an override to any assessment or quiz in Moodle to add extra time or change a due date:
1. Navigate to your Moodle course page
2. Click on the assignment or assessment activity where you want to apply an override
3. Select the More menu  
4. Select Overrides
5. Click Add user override
6. Enter the student’s name in the Search box
7. Select the student’s name from the list of search results
8. Adjust the settings you want to override. You can adjust the following:

  • Submission date
  • Due date
  • Cut-off Date
  • Time limit
