StoryMaps: Design a Dynamic and Spatially-Driven Narrative

Students and faculty: find your course below to access materials I shared in class. In most cases, these materials repeat information already presented on this libguide and were redesigned with your course in mind. Be sure to also explore the Example Collections page, where I have created customized collections of existing StoryMaps projects which could be helpful while designing your own.

Look at each of the StoryMaps below. How does the content and formatting impact you as a reader? Pay attention to all of the different decisions authors made for visuals and hypermedia. Why were those choices made?

Story-in-a-Story:

Your class needs to decide how they want the story to be organized. Think back to the options above and which would be best to represent the class' research. Keep in mind: you can embed a Story into another Story -- this is a good idea if everyone is doing research on their own section/example.

Example of a Sidecar StoryMap with embedded stories inside.

Bugs/Fixes:

"Page can't be found" when opening StoryMap file

How to Fix It:

  1. Click on StoryMap title or the 3-button menu.
  2. You will arrive at your StoryMap's Item Details Page. On the top right-hand side of the page, click Edit.
  3. Your StoryMap will successfully open.

Why it's Happening:

This isn't through any fault of yours, but likely due to a recent software update. If 1) you are the StoryMap creator or 2) your group has published the StoryMap, you might not be affected.
